\n\tThe Stalin Line was a system of fortified regions along the former western border of the USSR, extending from the Karelian Isthmus to the shores of the Black Sea. The defensive line was built between 1928 and the autumn of 1939.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThe fortified regions\u2019 combat strength was based on permanent reinforced-concrete pillboxes designed to house garrisons and accommodate guns and machine guns. More than 4,000 permanent firing positions were built along its 1,835 km length. Four fortified regions \u2014 Polotsk, Minsk, Slutsk and Mozyr \u2014 were located in what is now Belarus.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tSources differ regarding the number of permanent fortifications built along the Stalin Line. The table therefore gives the lowest and highest figures we found. The \u2018Total\u2019 column shows the maximum number of fortifications.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tWhat was the purpose of this vast defensive system? <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tAfter the end of the First World War, virtually every European country came to recognise that fortresses were unsuitable for securing borders and that the most promising approach was to construct fortified regions or defensive lines.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tIn the 1920s and 1930s, a \u2018fortification fever\u2019 for strengthening national borders swept across many European countries. Between 1929 and 1936, France constructed a system of permanent fortifications along its borders with Germany, Luxembourg and part of Belgium \u2014 the famous Maginot Line. Germany built the West Wall (Siegfried Line) and East Wall; Finland built the Mannerheim Line; and Greece built the Metaxas Line, named after the Greek dictator. Czechoslovakia, Poland and Romania also fortified their borders. The very fact that fortifications were being constructed along the borders of many European states reflected the difficult political situation, escalating national and territorial disputes, and preparations for war.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tDrawing on the experience of the First World War and the Russian Civil War, Soviet fortification specialists proposed constructing a series of fortified regions along the western border of the Soviet Union, consisting of permanent firing positions (pillboxes).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tBy the mid-1930s, the USSR had a total of 13 fortified regions in the European part of the country: the Karelian Fortified Region on the border with Finland, and the Kingisepp and Pskov Fortified Regions on the borders with Estonia and Latvia. The border with Poland was protected by <\/span><\/span>Polotsk, <\/span>Minsk, Mozyr, Korosten, Novograd-Volynsky, Letichev and Mogilev-Yampol Fortified Regions. Finally, the Rybnitsa and Tiraspol Fortified Regions were located on the border with Romania. A separate fortified region, the Kiev Fortified Region, was built to defend Kiev. Each fortified region generally extended for 60\u2013140 km along the front. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t <\/p>\n

\n\tIn 1938\u20131939, construction began on eight more fortified regions along the western border: Ostrov, Sebezh, Izyaslav, Shepetovka, Staro-Konstantinov, Ostropol, Kamenets-Podolsky and Slutsk. The USSR thus acquired its own defensive line, which became informally known as the Stalin Line, by analogy with the already well-known Maginot Line and Mannerheim Line.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
