In early 2016, work began at the Stalin Line Historical and Cultural Complex to reconstruct a KV tank, with support from Wargaming. Our specialists first turned their attention to the turret, which had been restored by May 2016.<\/div>\n

Alexander Mikhailovich Metla, Director of the \u201cMemory of Afghanistan\u201d Foundation, then succeeded in obtaining a tractor based on the ISU-152 from Belarusian Railways. This self-propelled gun was based on the IS heavy tank, which replaced the KV. The engine and transmission compartment and running gear of these tanks had much in common. Our specialists Alexander Mikalutsky, Vladimir Yakushev and his sons Alexei and Maxim had to remove the engine and transmission from the tractor, cut away the superstructure and part of the hull, construct the distinctive KV hull, reinstall the engine and transmission, and then fit the restored turret to the tank.<\/span><\/div>\n

By mid-July, the tank hull had been reconstructed. By the end of the month, the engine and transmission had been installed and work had begun on fitting the remaining equipment.<\/div>\n

By 11 August, the addition of track guards, together with the ball mount for the machine gun and the antenna mounting on the front of the hull, finally gave the KV we were restoring its recognisable appearance:<\/div>\n

Once the restoration of the turret and construction of the KV hull were nearing completion, it was time to turn to the turret ring. As no original was available, a turret ring from a T-34-85 turret that had once served as a target on a firing range had to be used. Unfortunately, it was wider than the KV turret ring. To reduce its width, our restoration specialists had to cut out and remove several sections from the T-34-85 turret ring, which had already been penetrated in several places.<\/div>\n

Work on assembling a DT tank machine gun for the KV was also nearing completion. To enable it to fire blank ammunition, our specialists had to make a special duralumin insert for the machine-gun pan magazine and modify the barrel to prevent live ammunition from being fired.<\/div>\n

On the evening of 16 August, the turret was fitted to the KV-1 hull, bringing the restoration work close to completion. On 18 August, the tank successfully completed its running trials and fired its gun and machine gun. The restored KV-1 heavy tank was then ready for its official unveiling and service at the Stalin Line Historical and Cultural Complex.<\/div>\n
