On 6 August 2016, our complex hosted the 2nd “Afghan Sky” Festival, marking Paratroopers Day and Special Operations Forces Day, which are traditionally celebrated in Belarus on 2 August.
The festival began with a rally at which Alexander Mikhailovich Metla, Director of the “Memory of Afghanistan” Foundation, addressed the reenactors.
This was followed by the opening of an exhibition of photographs by the renowned Russian writer and Captain 1st Rank Nikolai Cherkashin, author of more than 70 books on naval history and the Great Patriotic War.
Visitors to the complex could enjoy a performance by the USSR band, led by A. Zhadan, have their photograph taken in front of the festival banner and compete in Ready for Labour and Defence (GTO) events, with the winners receiving a free tank ride.
Before the reenactment, our visitors watched light-aircraft displays, hand-to-hand combat demonstrations by reconnaissance personnel from the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Belarus, and a performance by young members of a martial arts club led by reserve major and internationalist veteran Grigory Mamaiko:
The highlight of the festival was a reenactment of a battle from the Soviet–Afghan War.
