100 mm Anti-Aircraft Gun, Model 1947 (KS-19)

The KS-19 anti-aircraft artillery system entered service in 1947. Its primary purpose was to engage high-altitude aerial targets travelling at speeds of up to 900 km/h.

The gun was laid using hydraulic servo drives synchronously controlled by a PUAZO anti-aircraft fire-control director. Manual laying was also possible using the indicators on the receiving instruments or the sight. When engaging aerial targets, the 100 mm anti-aircraft gun was used in conjunction with a gun-laying radar and the automated PUAZO-7 anti-aircraft fire-control director. The system’s radar could detect targets at ranges of more than 50 kilometres. The system also included a mobile power station.
The 100 mm anti-aircraft guns fired 15.5 kg high-explosive fragmentation shells with time fuzes. The gun had a rate of fire of 14–15 rounds per minute and could engage targets at altitudes of up to 15 kilometres.

The KS-19 anti-aircraft artillery system was used by the anti-aircraft units of the ground forces. However, further increases in aircraft altitude and speed necessitated the adoption of surface-to-air missile systems by the Air Defence Forces. The KS-19 remains in use today for avalanche control in mountainous areas and for dispersing hail clouds. A special shell containing chemicals was developed for this purpose, causing precipitation to fall from clouds.
