At 10:00 on 9 September 2022, a commemorative event marking the heroic actions of the tank crews under his command and Tankers’ Day began at the grave of tank commander and Hero of the Soviet Union Ivan Stepanovich Mirenkov in the Eastern Cemetery in Minsk.
A delegation from South Moravia in the Czech Republic, which was liberated through the heroic actions of Mirenkov’s tank crews, arrived at the Stalin Line Historical and Cultural Complex the previous day especially to take part in the event. In the complex’s chapel, together with the Executive Director of the Stalin Line Historical and Cultural Complex, they prayed for an end to the war in Ukraine, for peace in Belarus, for the preservation of our complex, for the repose of all those killed in Ukraine, for reconciliation between the parties and for the humane treatment of prisoners.
In addition to the guests from the Czech Republic, representatives of the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Belarus also took part in the commemoration of Ivan Mirenkov at the Eastern Cemetery,
as did Alexander Mikhailovich Metla, Director of the “Memory of Afghanistan” Foundation; his assistant, Sergei Viktorovich Bogdanov; Alexander Alexandrovich Metla, Executive Director of the Stalin Line Historical and Cultural Complex; members of the “Soldiers of Victory” Club; and pupils from Loshany School and Minsk Gymnasium No. 18.
Radek Harashta, head of the “Starovičky” Military History Club, spoke on behalf of the Czech delegation. Radek not only maintains the Mirenkov memorial in Starovičky, but also works with his club to hold events commemorating the heroic actions of the Soviet soldiers who liberated Moravia from German Nazism.
A pupil from Gymnasium No. 18 announced the launch of a campaign to name the school after Ivan Mirenkov.
Clergy from the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Minsk conducted a memorial service for Ivan Mirenkov.
The commemorative event concluded with the laying of flowers.
