To expand the railway exhibition at our complex, Belarusian Railway has donated an AS-1A railcar (Service Railcar, Type 1, Version A).
The Russian word автомотри́са is derived from the French automotrice, which in turn comes from the Ancient Greek word αὐτός, meaning ‘self’, and the Latin mōtrīx, meaning ‘mover’. In essence, it is a powered, self-propelled railway vehicle used to carry passengers or railway maintenance personnel. When fitted with the appropriate equipment, it can also be used to transport goods, carry out installation work on overhead lines and perform similar tasks. The term автовагон (‘motor coach’) was also formerly used. This railway ‘loaf’ was built in the Soviet Union from 1964 to 1980 at the Locomotive and Carriage Repair Plant in Velikiye Luki. It is powered by a 70 hp engine from a GAZ-51 vehicle. Its maximum speed is 82 km/h and its load capacity is 2.4 tonnes. A total of 2,143 AS-1A railcars were built.
