By 11 August, the addition of track guards, together with the ball mount for the machine gun and the antenna mounting on the front of the hull, finally gave the KV we were restoring its recognisable appearance:
Once the restoration of the turret and construction of the KV hull were nearing completion, it was time to turn to the turret ring. As no original was available, a turret ring from a T-34-85 turret that had once served as a target on a firing range had to be used. Unfortunately, it was wider than the KV turret ring. To reduce its width, our restoration specialists had to cut out and remove several sections from the T-34-85 turret ring, which had already been penetrated in several places.
Work on assembling a DT tank machine gun for the KV was also nearing completion. To enable it to fire blank ammunition, our specialists had to make a special duralumin insert for the machine-gun pan magazine and modify the barrel to prevent live ammunition from being fired.
