This was the most powerful fortified region in the Belarusian Military District. Its main task was to protect the city of Minsk, an important economic, political and transport hub.
The decision to begin constructing the Minsk Fortified Region was adopted by a resolution of the USSR Council of Labour and Defence dated 15 February 1932. The fortified region extended for 140 km along the front. Its defensive depth varied between one and 5.5 kilometres in different sectors.
It contained a total of 327 pillboxes. The Minsk Fortified Region comprised 10 battalion defence sectors and seven separate company defence sectors. We are within Separate Company Defence Sector C, which included 18 permanent firing positions: three Artillery Half-Caponiers, one anti-tank firing position fitted with a T-26 tank turret, and a number of Machine-Gun Pillboxes and command and observation posts. The border lay 4.5 km from these positions.
