For many years, German troops travelled in a BTR-40 during historical reenactments held at the Stalin Line Historical and Cultural Complex. Thanks to Soviet films, the older generation had no doubt that this armoured vehicle was German. However, a new generation of reenactors wanted to see something more historically accurate.
A group of our restorers, led by Alexei Boyko, therefore set about building a replica Kübelwagen KdF Typ 82 — a light Wehrmacht utility vehicle, of which more than 50,000 were produced. The prototype of the ‘Kübel’ was designed by Ferdinand Porsche himself in 1938. Mass production began in 1940. The Wehrmacht used this vehicle to transport personnel, deliver ammunition and fuel, evacuate the wounded and serve as a mobile workshop. More than 30 variants of multipurpose vehicles were developed on its chassis.
