Military-Historical Reenactments Marking Tankers’ Day and a T-72 Crew Demonstration Run

On 12 and 13 September 2026, events marking Tankers’ Day will be held at the Stalin Line Historical and Cultural Complex with the support of the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Belarus.

Tankers’ Day is the professional holiday of tank crews and tank builders, celebrated annually on the second Sunday of September. It was established on 11 July 1946 by a Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR to commemorate the outstanding achievements of the armoured and mechanised forces during the Great Patriotic War, as well as the contribution made by tank builders in equipping the Armed Forces with armoured vehicles.

For their service to the Motherland in battle, many armoured and mechanised formations were awarded orders, granted Guards status and given honorary titles named after the cities and regions in the battles for which they had distinguished themselves. During the Great Patriotic War, 250,000 tank crewmen received state decorations, and 1,142 were awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. The first Belarusian to receive this honour was tank commander Pavel Yemelyanovich Kupriyanov, a native of the Vitebsk Region. Many tank crewmen were awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union twice. Three of them were our fellow countrymen from the Mogilev Region: Marshal of the Soviet Union Ivan Ignatyevich Yakubovsky, General of the Army Iosif Irakliyevich Gusakovsky and Colonel Stepan Fyodorovich Shutov.

Dear visitors!  To avoid congestion at the entrance to the complex, please purchase your tickets online and arrive 2–3 hours before the reenactment begins! Visitors with electronic tickets may park cars and minibuses FREE OF CHARGE, subject to availability!!!

Among all tickets purchased through the website, 10 tank ride certificates will be awarded in a prize draw. All tickets purchased before 20:00 on 11 September will be entered into the prize draw. The results, including the winning ticket numbers, will be posted on the VKontakte and Instagram social media accounts after 20:00 on 11 September. Each winner will receive a tank ride certificate at the email address provided when purchasing the ticket.

In November 2002, the Service Dog Instructor Training School was reorganised as the Canine Centre.

Today, the Canine Training Centre is a training unit of the border service. It provides initial, refresher and advanced training for dog handlers and trains service dogs for various duties, including tracking (following a person’s scent trail), sentry duties, specialist searches (detecting narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, weapons, ammunition and explosives), guard duties (protecting facilities), as well as breeding and raising service dog breeds.

Today, the Canine Training Centre of the border service is recognised as one of the best not only among the CIS countries, but also in Eastern Europe.

The Belarusian strategic offensive Operation Bagration began on 23 June and ended on 29 August 1944. During 68 days of continuous offensive operations, Soviet troops advanced 550–600 km westwards along a 1,100 km front. Belarus, part of the Baltic region and part of Poland east of the Vistula were completely liberated. The German Army Group Centre was almost entirely destroyed, with the enemy losing more than 400,000 officers and men.

During Operation Bagration, Soviet troops effectively reversed the events of 1941, but this time it was German divisions that perished in encirclements. Vitebsk was liberated on 26 June, Orsha on 27 June, Bobruisk on 29 June, Borisov on 1 July and Minsk on 3 July. During the operation, an enemy force of 105,000 men from the German 4th and 9th Armies was encircled east of Minsk. The encircled force was eliminated between 5 and 12 July 1944. The enemy lost more than 70,000 men killed and around 35,000 taken prisoner. On 17 July 1944, a column of captured Wehrmacht officers and men taken in the “Minsk Pocket” marched through the streets of Moscow. Among them were 12 German generals: three corps commanders and nine divisional commanders.

The demonstration run follows a route of approximately 2,200 metres and includes firing the tank’s standard NSVT and PKT machine guns and 125 mm gun. The route features natural and artificial obstacles.

The Combined Concert Group was formed in September 2013 as part of the joint Russian-Belarusian Zapad 2013 exercises. The most talented service personnel from various Air Force and Air Defence Forces units were selected to take part in the programme. During the exercises, the Combined Concert Group gave 16 concerts, travelling 1,200 km and visiting 16 military units.

In 2014, the Combined Concert Group began an active programme of creative work, welcoming new performers, exploring new horizons and reaching new heights. Variety was brought to the concert programme by the Beskonechnost Vocal and Instrumental Ensemble, composed entirely of conscripts from the 8th Radio-Technical Brigade. The ensemble remains part of the Concert Group to this day.

Its continuous artistic development and growing professionalism have led to participation in various international competitions and festivals.

In 2016, soloists from the Concert Group became prize-winners and laureates at the nationwide “Shield of Russia” festival in Nizhny Novgorod. In 2017, the group added an honourable second place and the special prize for “Best Performance of a Patriotic Song” to its collection of awards at the 12th nationwide “Katyusha” festival of folk art for members of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and other security services, war and military service veterans, and their families, held in Moscow. Members of the Concert Group have also repeatedly received awards at various editions of the televised “Zvezda” festival of army songs.

Throughout the history of the canine service, it has recruited dedicated professionals with an excellent knowledge of operational duties and the ability to establish a rapport with man’s four-legged friends.

Afghanistan was to prove a true test in combat for Soviet tank crews. The tank units of the ‘Limited Contingent’ comprised the established regiments of three motor rifle divisions deployed from the Turkestan and Central Asian Military Districts: the 24th Guards Tank Regiment of the 5th Guards Motor Rifle Division, the 285th Tank Regiment of the 108th Motor Rifle Division and the 234th Tank Regiment of the 201st Motor Rifle Division, as well as the tank battalions of motor rifle regiments and brigades.
They had to conduct combat operations in terrain wholly unsuited to tanks and perform duties for which tank crews had never been trained. Consequently, the 24th Guards and 234th Tank Regiments were withdrawn from Afghanistan as early as the summer of 1980. In March 1986, the 285th Tank Regiment was reorganised as the 682nd Motor Rifle Regiment. However, tank battalions remained within the motor rifle regiments and separate brigades.
In addition to tanks, lighter armoured vehicles were widely used during combat operations: BTR-60PB, BTR-70 and BTR-80 armoured personnel carriers; BMP-1 and BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles; BMD-1 and BMD-2 airborne infantry fighting vehicles; BRDM-2 armoured reconnaissance and patrol vehicles; and MT-LB multipurpose tracked carriers.
Together, the 12 motor rifle regiments, two motor rifle brigades, four airborne regiments and one air assault brigade had approximately 3,000 light armoured vehicles. According to figures cited in I. Drogovoz’s book, in 1988 the 40th Army had 388 infantry and airborne fighting vehicles and 2,888 armoured personnel carriers.
Other vehicles used included ZSU-23-4 Shilka self-propelled anti-aircraft guns, IMR-1 obstacle-clearing engineering vehicles, BMR-2 mine-clearing vehicles and BTS-2 and BTS-4 armoured recovery tractors.
We present a reenactment of one episode from the combat history of Soviet tank crews, featuring vehicles used during the deployment of the Limited Contingent of Soviet Forces in the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan (1979–1989): the T-55, BMP-1, BMD-1 and BTR-D.

The demonstration run follows a route of approximately 2,200 metres and includes firing the tank’s standard NSVT and PKT machine guns and 125 mm gun. The route features natural and artificial obstacles.
